Lugo is a city in northwestern Spain, in Galicia.
It was founded in 25 BC by Paulo Fabio Máximo and is the oldest city in Galicia, which was called Lucus Augusti. In the city there are numerous Roman remains, many of which are preserved in the Provincial Museum, as well as the Roman wall, unique in the world, which is preserved in its entirety and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. It is 85 km from the coast, although the province has a sea. It is called La Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad de Lugo (The Very Noble and Loyal City of Lugo).
Today, Lugo is a commercial and service city, with a university campus specialising in agricultural sciences (e.g. agronomy and veterinary science). There are also several popular festivals, such as the Arde Lucus, which commemorates the city's Roman past (June), and San Froilán, which is celebrated between 4 and 12 October.
The Mayoress of the city, Ms. Lara Méndez-López, will receive the participants in the Town Hall, a baroque building unique in Spain. Depending on the number of participants, the reception could be in the MIHL Museum.
We will visit the Roman wall and the Roman house called "Mitreo", the ancient hierarchy of Lugo in Roman times.
Mayoress: Dª Lara Méndez-López
20:00 -22:00 h: Welcome dinner
We will taste local products and enjoy good wines, all of them produced in Galicia under protected designation of origin.
There will also be an interesting presentation about the city and its history and a performance of the popular culture of the region.
